Lao PDR and GGGI Collaborate to Drive NDC Implementation Forward

Sep 1, 2023 | News

Lao PDR is making significant progress in tackling climate change through its collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). Together, they are advancing the implementation of the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement. This partnership has been instrumental in helping Lao PDR turn its ambitious climate goals into actionable steps, focusing on sectors like agriculture, energy, and forestry.

One of the major achievements in this collaboration is the development of a comprehensive NDC Implementation Plan, which has been aligned with Lao PDR’s national development strategies. GGGI has played a key role in providing technical support, helping the Lao government design projects that promote green growth and sustainable development. The focus is on integrating climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts into national policies, ensuring that these actions contribute to both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Agriculture, a critical sector for Lao PDR, is being addressed through sustainable farming practices aimed at reducing emissions and building resilience to climate impacts. In the energy sector, the focus is on scaling up renewable energy projects, particularly in hydropower, solar, and biomass, to meet domestic demand and contribute to regional energy exports.

In addition, GGGI and the Lao government are working together to develop strategies for improving Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems, which will ensure that progress toward climate targets is effectively monitored and reported. This step is crucial for maintaining transparency and securing international funding for future climate initiatives.

Through this partnership, Lao PDR is well-positioned to meet its NDC commitments while fostering sustainable development that benefits the environment and local communities.
