Lao PDR’s Push for Carbon Neutrality: Protecting Wetlands, Forests, and Promoting Smart Agriculture

Oct 15, 2024 | News

Lao PDR is taking bold steps towards achieving its climate goals, playing a crucial role in the global fight against climate change under the Paris Agreement. As part of the Climate Promise II initiative, the country is accelerating the implementation of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The second updated NDC, set to conclude in 2025, outlines Lao PDR’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through innovative and sustainable practices.

To support these efforts, the UNDP team, in partnership with the Department of Climate Change under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), recently conducted a field visit to pilot areas in Champhone District, Savannakhet Province. The focus was on showcasing how protecting critical ecosystems—such as wetlands and forests—along with promoting climate-smart agricultural practices can significantly reduce emissions and enhance community resilience.

During the visit, the team demonstrated practical approaches that communities can adopt to contribute to carbon neutrality. Wetland protection, for example, is a key component of the strategy, as these areas play a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide and mitigating floods. Forestry conservation is equally important, with the goal of increasing forest cover and promoting sustainable forest management practices that preserve biodiversity and store carbon. Furthermore, the promotion of smart agriculture not only enhances food security but also helps farmers adopt practices that minimize carbon footprints, such as improved irrigation techniques and agroforestry.

These efforts reflect Lao PDR’s deep commitment to the Paris Agreement and its ambitious climate targets. Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 will require the collaboration of multiple stakeholders—government agencies, communities, and international partners alike. The UNDP is proud to work alongside the Lao government in advancing these critical initiatives and ensuring a sustainable future for all.

Stay tuned as Lao PDR continues to forge ahead on this path to sustainability, leveraging partnerships and innovative solutions to make a lasting impact in the fight against climate change.
