Local Communities in Savannakhet Lead the Way in Strengthening Forest Management

Oct 15, 2024 | News

In an inspiring effort to safeguard their local environment, communities from three villages in Savannakhet Province—Thamuang, Xevangkhet, and Laonard—are taking active steps to enhance forest management and conservation. On May 7-8, 2024, representatives from these villages, alongside district and provincial authorities, gathered in Vientiane to participate in a Consultation on Local Forest Management Regulations. This event was organized by the Department of Climate Change (DCC) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), with valuable support from UNDP Lao PDR as part of the Climate Promise II project.

During the consultation, the participants worked collaboratively to draft a regulation aimed at protecting village forests. This regulation, once finalized, will play a crucial role in improving local forest management practices, helping to curb illegal land encroachment and deforestation for agricultural purposes. The new guidelines will empower these communities to actively monitor and manage their natural resources, ensuring sustainable use while preserving the region’s vital ecosystems.

Forest conservation isn’t just about protecting trees; it’s about securing the future for generations to come. These initiatives will not only reduce environmental degradation but also contribute to Lao PDR’s broader climate goals, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. By fostering responsible forest management, the villagers are working toward a healthier planet while maintaining the livelihoods of their communities.

As we look to the future, the dedication shown by these communities serves as a reminder that local actions can have a global impact. With the support of UNDP and the Lao government, these villagers are setting a powerful example of community-driven climate action.

🍃🌏 Together, we can protect our forests and build a sustainable future for all. 🌟
